Ahold has completed the sale of its Chilean unit Santa Isabel to
local retailer Cencosud for $77m, much-needed cash at a time when
the Dutch group is facing reduced profits as a result of its
accounting irregularities.
Dutch group Ahold has completed its takeover of Chilean subsidiary
Santa Isabel, raising its stake in the company from just over 70
per cent to 97 per cent as a result of a tender offer.
Ahold's enforced takeover of the Santa Isabel chain in Chile has
not been welcomed by everyone, with one of the company's minority
shareholders taking legal action to force the Ducth group to
increase its offer.
Dutch retailer Royal Ahold said on Monday that it would bid about
$50 million for the shares of Chilean supermarket firm Santa Isabel
that it did not already own.
